Envisioning a society healed from identity-based oppression and trauma
Chosen Family Therapy prioritizes serving clients who require access to culturally humble psychotherapy and coaching to heal from identity-based oppression and trauma. Chosen Family Therapy commits to positive social and environmental impact via sustainable economic development.
Chosen Family Therapy adopts a culturally humble approach to addressing compounding experiences of discrimination based on our clients’ overlapping marginalized identities by recognizing and validating the social contexts surrounding historical violence and systemic oppression based on-but not limited to-mental health, race, class, disabilities, body type, immigration status, neurodivergence, gender, sexuality, and non-traditional relationships.
We promote self-love, self-compassion, and self-acceptance by supporting and motivating our clients based on our company values:
Who we serve
The clients who seek us out are generally looking for a therapist that understands: The lived experience of being oppressed by one’s mental health, race, class, disabilities, body type, immigration status, neurodivergence, gender, sexuality, and non-traditional relationships, and want to heal from trauma.
Additionally, our clients are overall, non-conformists or have what some may consider unconventional ways of thinking and behaving, and live what some may call alternative lifestyles. We consider our clients to be creative, and we value nurturing their uniqueness rather than expecting them to conform to normative ways of being, thinking, and living. That’s why our providers were carefully selected based on their capacity for cultural humility, and for their creative approach to healing. We feel inspired and excited to focus on culturally humble psychotherapy and coaching for creative minds and bodies.

I hope to help you somehow.
I have been a Psychologist for over two decades (besides I can look younger!), interested in helping people to overcome their obstacles to reach their happiness. Most of them are in our mind, but we do not know how to deal with them.
Decades ago “mindfulness” and “coaching” were not a thing. Still, with the time we associated these names with this process.
I consider myself both a Psychologist and a Coach. Let us say a particular fusion.
I am a registered Coaching Psychologist, Chartered Psychologist, and Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society. Also, I am a member of the American Psychological Society (APA), Society of Counseling Psychology, Society of Consulting Psychology, and the American Psychology-Law Society. I am a licensed Psychologist both in the UK and Mexico.
I have a vast intercultural experience since I have lived, studied, lectured, and researched in different countries and met many cultures in the process. Even one of my fields of work is cultural management and Human Rights. I am currently a collaborator of UNESCO Mexico on these matters (#UNESCOSanLuis #LaCulturaEsUnDerecho).
I am a full-time professor at the University of Guadalajara, Mexico. I spend most time as a researcher. I am a Chartered Scientist by the Science Council (UK) and a National Researcher of the National System of Researchers in Mexico.
I got my PhD from the University of Barcelona (Spain), as an “International Doctor”, where I also got a Master’s degree. Additionally, I got a Master’s degree from the Pompeu Fabra University, as well in Barcelona, and my bachelor in Psychology in Mexico, at the Jesuit University ITESO.

As a life coach I will use my therapeutic training to help you:
· Change your thinking
· Increase your emotional wellbeing
· Change limited belief systems
· Reframe past experiences
· Set and achieve goals
· Make life changes
· Increase motivation
· Learn a new skill
· Transform your self-identity
In general, life coaching is focused on the PRESENT AND FUTURE. The goal is to understand your current life experience and belief systems by using your past as a lens to better understand yourself. The primary goal is to help you identify what is holding you back and help you achieve your goals. I do this through the use of techniques from Schema Therapy, CBT, CPT and DBT.
As a therapist I have helped clients with these areas of their life in addition to:
· Treat mental illness or clinical anxiety or depression
· Heal past trauma
· Cope with traumatic loss
· Cope with abuse
· Treat addiction or substance abuse
· Cope with relationship turmoil or violence
In general, therapy is PAST AND PRESENT FOCUSED. As a therapist the primary focus of sessions is treatment with healing trauma, overcoming abuse, treating addiction or treating mental illness.
Why I prefer life coaching
While I have training and experience treating mental illness, I have found that what most people need is to not feel like they have an illness that needs “treating.” Instead, I like to help clients identify schemas that keep them from achieving their goals and work towards learning new ways to overcome them to transform in the person they want to become.
- Those who have tried traditional routes of therapy, but feel like it wasn’t the right fit.
- Those who are looking for more – but unsure exactly what that means.
- Those who are feeling lost and unsure of their place in the world or purpose.
- Those who are open-minded and ready for radical changes.
- Those who are frustrated with the traditional ways of thinking and living.
- Those who need a safe space to share their thoughts/feelings, particularly on taboo subjects (sex, non-traditional relationships, kinks, spirituality, esoteric beliefs, etc.)
- Those who feel like outcasts or feel born in the wrong times.
- Those open to exploring spirituality in a unique way.
- Those looking for more fulfilling, sacred and authentic engagements.
Online coaching from professional BDSM educator and former International Mr Leather, John Pendal – either as video calls to individuals and relationship groups, or workshops to larger numbers.
John has 17 years experience teaching BDSM workshops around the world. His life coaching practice helps people who feel like outsiders with any area of their life, both personal and professional. Coaching takes place over video calls, so you can be calling from anywhere in the world.
John is relatable rather than aspirational. During his life John has experienced negative thoughts, gay conversion therapy, coeliac disease, back surgery and identifies as autistic. He has also become the only British winner of the International Mr Leather contest in Chicago and had a ten year career as a stand-up comedian which has taken him around the world.
He wants to help other people, especially those who feel like an outsider. You may feel that way because of your gender or sexuality, neurodiversity, health diagnosis or just a feeling of “not fitting in”. John will listen and ask questions in total confidence and without judgement.
John has helped his clients to discover who they are, what their passions are, find their voice, achieve goals, accept themselves, be happier and change their lives.
