Benjamin Howard, MAEd, MACG, LPC (he/him)
Licensed Professional Counselor
Specialties: I have a particular passion for working with LGBTQIA+ clients to address concerns related to stress management, trauma, anxiety and depression, career counseling, sex counseling, and consensual nonmonogamy.
We all have needs. Sometimes they’re big, complicated needs like a feeling of belonging or sense of purpose. Sometimes needs are more basic like getting enough sleep or feeling safe where we live. Whenever we don’t get a need met, that creates unfinished business – needs that linger around. Too much unfinished business and we become fragmented, unable to effectively deal with our present because we’re so consumed about past needs or too worried about future ones. Using a foundation based on a combination of Gestalt Therapy, Feminist Therapy, and Solution Focused Brief Therapy, I help people define and address their needs.
Training & Background:
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor serving clients remotely throughout Illinois. With nearly a decade of experience working with a diverse range of students and clients ages 14 and up, I have served as a college educator, academic advisor and career coach since 2011 and a mental health practitioner since 2018. I earned my MA in Counseling & Guidance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and my MA in Education from the University of St. Mary.
I’m a huge nerd! Outside of my counseling work, I spend a lot of my free time gaming with friends and family, reading or watching sci-fi, and getting lost down Wikipedia rabbit-trails. I’ve also become a big fan of history YouTube. Self-care is important, so I also take regular walks and aspire to flexibility by practicing yoga.
Disclaimer: All licensed services provided under the full professional and clinical control of Dr. Jeana Lucarelli, MA, PsyD.
I help people with alternative sexualities who feel alone, abnormal, and unlovable. I show them how to accept themselves in their beauty and strength, so they can experience loving connection in their lives. I’m a Certified Somatic Therapist, which means I use a combination of talk, touch, and movement to work with you as a whole person – not just a brain, but a body, heart, and spirit. In this form of therapy, we use the body as a primary source of information and healing. By getting you in conversation with your body, I can help you to discover the habits that are holding you back, the stories you tell yourself that keep you stuck, and the pathway to different possibilities in your life. Release trauma, get relief from chronic pain, befriend your body and find the love and the life you deserve.
Connect to Self, Love, and Others has been my motto in all that I do. By connecting into my Self, my identity, my values, I am able to access my Love and express it outwards. It’s all that makes me who I am. I want to align my Love in all that I do to use it as the guide towards what I seek to change.
How will we work together?
I utilize Somatics, Breathwork, Expressive Arts, Narrative, and CBT & DBT based skills while staying grounded in a Person-Centred and Anti-Oppressive Framework. I also offer to integrate the Tarot as a tool of therapy.

I’m part of the Auckland queer, kinky, and polyam communities, and live openly. I recognise that not everyone has the desire or the privilege to do so! I am also fat, chronically ill, and carefully manage my time/spoons. I provide sessions three days a week. I am MNZAC registered with NZAC.
I’m based in West Auckland, with a disability-friendly office in Avondale. There’s plenty of parking, gender-neutral toilets, and the atmosphere is relaxed.
Currently I provide counselling to individuals aged 18 and over.

I specialize in working with issues of complex and adulthood trauma, sexual violence and domestic violence, LGBTQ+ populations, substance use and addiction, alternative sexualities such as polyamory/non-monogamy, kink/BDSM, and sex work. I also believe that forms of social oppression such as racism, sexism, ableism, heterosexism, and so on, operate as traumas and stressors as well and thus, are of clinical concern as barriers to wellness. My practice is grounded in the principles of non-judgment, positive regard, harm reduction, and compassion. I earned my Masters in Social Work from the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College.
