At Authentic Self Counseling & Sex Therapy, I am committed to helping individuals and their partners overcome relationship, sex, intimacy, and substance abuse concerns. My work utilizes strengths-based approaches rooted in sexual empowerment.
I welcome all individuals regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or relationship structure. In addition, I have substantial experience with sexual diversity including but not limited to persons within the kink and leather communities, structured relationships, and consensual non-monogamy.
I approach each client from a non-judgmental stance while working to understand the clients’ unique worldview. There are many lenses that can be applied to deepen our understanding of ourselves and others and as a therapist she works to collaborate with the client to understand the influence of previous relationships and cultural images. I work from a feminist standpoint through Relational-Cultural Therapy and practice EMDR for trauma work. We grow through action in relationship with others including the therapeutic relationship and in relationships that are connected, authentic, have mutual empathy and mutual empowerment.
My background is in art, psychology and gender/sexuality studies, specifically critiquing cultural representations of sexuality. I am passionate about working with clients that are LGBTQ+, in more than monogamous relationships and practice alternative sexuality and lifestyles. I bring in-depth knowledge of kink and see its potential to be positive, healing and spiritual. I see consensual non-monogamy as a path of self-understanding and relational growth. I have both lived experience and professional training which have shaped her understanding of these topics. I believe in the healing power of pleasure.

I received my Master’s of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Trevecca University and hold a LPC-MHSP (temp) license in the state of Tennessee. I am also a National Board Certified Counselor (#1165333) and a member of the American Counseling Association (ACA), Imago Relationships North America, the Nashville Psychotherapy Institute (NPI), and the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT).

People are sometimes surprised to learn of my career in comedy writing, but I see the similarities as this: comedy is about observing life’s biggest and smallest moments while writing is about exploring someone’s intimate story, empathizing with their struggles, and letting their life unfold beautifully.

Heather M. Garner is a Licensed Certified Social Worker Clinical (LCSW-C) with a private psychotherapy practice in Towson, Maryland where she provides individual and couples therapy and sex therapy. Heather is a kink and consensual non-monogamy/ “poly”-knowledgeable sex therapist with extensive experience treating couples and individuals in the kink community. She has found that while most people worry about the first step of contacting a therapist, members of the kink and poly communities often have a more difficult time entering into treatment. Members of these communities need to find a therapist who will not make his or her lifestyle choices an issue when it is not one. They also should not be responsible for educating their therapist about his or her interests, sexual activities or desires. In working with Heather, you will find a kink and consensually non-monogamous/ “poly”-knowledgeable, non-judgmental, compassionate sex therapist who has worked with a wide variety of clients with varying interests, roles, gender identities, sexual orientations, and relationship structures. As a member of AASECT, Heather values her clients’ individuality and sexuality and works with clients to encourage consensual, exploitation-free, honest, protected, and pleasurable encounters. In addition to her direct work with clients, Heather also believes strongly in education for the mental health, poly and kink communities. She teaches consensually non-monogamous and kink-based continuing education courses for mental health professionals and regularly presents at kink community and group events. Along with her work with consensually non-monogamous/ polyamorous persons, Heather has training in Trauma-Focused Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Grief Recovery, is a Certified Relational Life Therapy clinician (RLT), and she holds a certificate from the University of Michigan Sexual Health Certificate Program, Sex Therapy Track.
Working for over a decade with individual, couples, and poly-families in the Las Vegas valley. Specializing in the Kink, Lifestyle, Poly-Family, and LGBTQAI Communities.
Who am I and how does this work?
So, how does this work? Well, in short we’re going to talk about how you got to where you are to figure out what is helping you and what is hurting you. We’ll talk about your experiences, memories, thoughts, feelings, and goals related to your concerns to establish exactly what you want out of this process. Then we’re going to use science based tools to help you get where you want to be as efficiently as possible.
Areas of Expertise
The simple act of talking can do amazing things. Combine that with decades of research and years of training and you have a process that can help heal tremendous wounds. Bring in your expertise on your own life and I’ll use my training to help you build the life you want.

Sometimes life feels overwhelming, and that’s normal. But what about when it feels overwhelming all the time? When you can’t relax, even if you want to? Learn how to tame the anxiety beast and allow yourself to de-stress using tools from a variety of evidence-based therapies.
Being a woman can be intensely frustrating and confusing even with all the strides made in gender equality. People tell you when, how, and even if you should have a family. Employers treat you differently. You work twice as hard to get half as far. Your body is a topic of legislation. They way in which you present your woman-ness, the size of your body, the clothes you wear, your sexuality, the way you speak- is under constant critique no matter what you do. There are so many “rules” for how to live and they’re all in conflict and changing constantly. Let’s talk about how YOU want to live your life.

For more than 20 years, I have provided therapy to individuals, couples and groups, as well as offering training, consultation and clinical supervision to community organizations. My work centers around bridging transitions, fostering personal growth and developing compassionate responses and strategies to address life’s challenges. In addition to providing support and encouragement, I will challenge you to think critically about the choices you are making and to work toward overcoming the obstacles that may be keeping you from achieving your goals.
Whether you’re trying to learn something new, working on making a transition, or building your support network, you have a lot of choice about how and with whom you work on achieving your goals. There are therapists and other service providers to appeal to everyone’s personal style. Taking the time to find a professional who is not only credentialed, but who has an approach or philosophy that resonates with you is an important first step.
My approach to everything that I do is to be as real as I can be. Whether I’m working with an individual in a therapy session, presenting to a large audience or collaborating on a community project, I’ve never been someone who is good at faking it. What you see is what you get. I hold myself to the same standards to which I hold my clients—authenticity and honesty are essential. I provide my clients with an accurate reflection of what I see and a professional assessment of how they might do things differently. I will challenge you to think critically about the choices you make and the impact those choices are having on your life.
I rely heavily on resources that foster creativity and humor. I don’t rely on gimmicks or hidden agendas—if I’ve got information or tools that will help you, I will share them with you and encourage you to make them your own.
As a therapist, I work hard to be flexible and responsive to the needs of my clients. There may be times when you feel you need more encouragement and support and less constructive feedback. Other times you may find that confronting an issue head-on feels more productive. I will encourage both of us to be patient with the process and to pay close attention to progress so that we can make adjustments throughout our work together.
My areas of expertise include: mindfulness and meditation; strategies for coping with depression and anxiety; issues around sexuality, sexual functioning and relationships; sexual and gender identity; social skills; trauma; grief; substance use; attention training and living with uncertainty and change.
To find out more about me, check out my website at www.jennbrandel.com, or call me to set up an initial consultation to see if we may be able to work together effectively.
Trained as an holistic sex therapist, I am able to “see past the kink” and work on whatever issues and goals you identify. I do not see kink as the problem and am even open to the possibility that it might be part of the solution. My practice is entirely online through secure video. I work with most private insurance companies, as well as Idaho Medicaid, and offer a sliding scale for those who are uninsured or prefer not to use insurance.
I am a psychotherapist, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, in private practice as a mental health provider. As a member of this community, I know how important it can be to find someone who understands sexual diversity when you are looking for a therapist. I believe all human beings hold inherent worth and deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, no matter who you are, where you’ve been, and what you’ve done. You have value, and you matter.
Whatever you’re going through, I am here to support you, without judgment or bias. My approach to therapy is down-to-earth, meeting people where they are through conversation. I view all of my work through a social justice lens. Quality therapy requires full consciousness of the inter-sectional identities and complex stressors that affect our lives.
As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I am a well-trained and experienced mental health provider. I also have a diverse set of work experiences that have shaped how I approach psychotherapy. I am both a Navy Veteran and a former Peace Corps Volunteer, but I spent the early years of my career as a community organizer in Los Angeles.
I have worked with many different populations in various locations, from New York City to Botswana, and I have a total of 4 years’ experience living and working abroad. While studying mental health and therapy at Columbia University in New York City, I had multiple opportunities that allowed me to learn from the best in the field.
My clinical foundation was built on working with adult survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse. I also volunteered my time on a national LGBT youth suicide hotline. After New York, I joined the military to serve as a Naval Officer. I worked as an active duty mental health provider at 5 different duty stations, including two tours as the Director of Mental Health Departments on military installations. During those years, I treated nearly every mental health condition but maintained a specialty in treating issues related to trauma and/or sexuality. Today, I work with a variety of populations, including Veterans, refugees, and sex offenders.
I am a proud Californian. San Diego is home, but I was born and raised in rural Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh. I come from a blue-collar, working-class family. My personal beliefs & interests
2020 has been a doozy of a year for all of us, and we’ve needed to find ways to cope with pandemic-level stress. In addition to YouTube yoga, sourdough bread-making, and Zoom parties, therapy is an indispensable tool for addressing your mental health needs. My goal is to provide a space to unapologetically be yourself and gain personal mastery.
My approach is:
1. Strengths-based: let’s identify the strengths you already have and use them to accomplish your goals.
2. Client-centered: you know you best! I’m here as a facilitator not a director
3. Evidenced-based: I love to geek out on data and use methodologies based in research.
Therapy is a process. I believe there is no one size fits all solution. As a result, I approach each situation with curiosity and openness. I am here and ready to listen with empathy, ask questions, and suggest therapeutic modalities. Let’s work together to try-on solutions that work best for you.
I trained as a counselor in the heart of San Francisco – land of inclusiveness, sexual exploration and no judgments! I specialize in addressing alternative relationship styles, including kink, consensual non-monogamy and LGBTQIA. If you are searching for a forum to improve your relationships and to become your best self, without shame, secrecy, or having to fit into anyone else’s concept of “normal”, then you’ve come to the right place. I recognize the unhealthy dynamics that can become entrenched between people who care deeply for one other and I help clients return to the connection and vulnerability that they have lost. I am an AASECT certified sex therapist, a somatic psychotherapist and a licensed marriage and family therapist practicing since 2008.

Sexual dysfunction can be an anxious topic to explore for many people. My goal is to empower you with the knowledge and skills to improve your sex life as well as to provide a calm, comfortable space to explore underlying issues. Several studies have connected a healthy, fulfilling sex to longevity, improved mental health, and higher relationship satisfaction. Also, I connect with doctors and physical therapists to provide all inclusive care.
I have come into work as a sex therapist with a reverence for sexual diversity and erotic intelligence. I am deeply rooted in my own personal journeys and explorations, as well as engagement with grassroots community organizing, academic theory and research, and ongoing clinical training. Where some therapeutic models might begin from an assumption of pathology, disease, and disorder, I find survival strength, resilience, and innate creativity at work even in the most challenging of experiences. Within the erotic is a life force that strives not just towards health but towards flourishing. I use modalities that cultivate the mind-body connection to help you explore what health and flourishing are for you.
