I originally started out in Humanities. I LOVE people and wanted to do all I could to understand all I could about people, communities and how people come to understand their worlds.
I have been involved in the ENM or Ethically Non-Monogamous community for 15 years, the KINK community for almost the same.
I moved into counselling 5 years ago and am a current Provisional member of New Zealand main counselling body, NZAC (New Zealand Association for counsellors. I studied narrative counselling after starting in psychodynamic psychotherapy as I beleive that every person is the expert in their own lives. I see my role as being the facilitator of the counselling experience.
From The Dulwich Centre :
Narrative therapy seeks to be a respectful, non-blaming approach to counselling and community work which centres people as the experts in their own lives. It views problems as separate from people and assumes people have many skills, competencies, beliefs, values, commitments and abilities that will assist them to reduce the influence of problems in their lives.
