You want what anyone else coming to therapy wants: To be seen and heard without having your orientation and lifestyle choices pathologized or even unduly focused on. You don’t want to have to teach what terminology means or deal with someone being shocked by your relationships and sexual activities. The focus should be on what is important to you, not what’s “fascinating” to some therapist. Maybe the work you are coming in to focus on has to do with this part of your life and maybe it doesn’t; either way, you deserve a therapist who can hold and affirm this part of your identity. I am proud to say I am LGBTQIA, Polyamory (and other forms of consensual non-monogamy), and Kink/BDSM affirmative in my work!
